About This Project

God's Country is a sociological exploration of isolation and identity in the midst of life's increasing indignities. The Upper Peninsula in Michigan is remote - socially, geographically, and culturally - from the rest of the state and country. Lauri Lappi, 88, continues to live alone in the Upper Peninsula despite his age and physical disabilities. I lived for months in a remote cabin near Lauri and his family, and got to know them well as they coped with various challenges.

While I was living in the Upper Peninsula, I did a lot of writing both for research and also for myself.
